Alex completely forgot about the last sparkling bracelet in the weeks after midterms, though it was impossible to forget about the murder -- it was the only thing anyone was talking about. He threw himself into his ongoing projects: the term paper for his astronomy class, a potions kit for that class, and his magical artefact. When he wasn't buried in magic he opened his ears to his fellow students. They chattered away before and after class, and sometimes during, as well as at meals in the dining hall and even while they walked through campus.

It wasn't until over a fortnight after he'd last seen Lapointe that he overheard two girls talking about someone he hadn't been sure existed -- the victim's grieving girlfriend. Apparently she'd hidden in her room for a while but was finally emerging to pick up on her classes, though she'd become something of a loner.

"Ugh, can you believe I heard that jerk Aspen talking about trying to get a pity bang out of her while she was too sad to say no?" said one of the girls.

"He is such an asshole," said the other girl, shaking her head. "Norelle would never go for it, anyway, she's waiting for marriage. I heard she never gave Harold more than a blowjob."

"Prude," said the first one, laughing, and then they'd passed out of Alex's hearing.

Alex looped back around to go back to the dorm, willing to be late for his lab time in order to call Agent Lapointe.

"Lapointe," she said briskly.

"It's Alex," he said, sitting on the edge of the bed. "Did you know the victim had a girlfriend?"

"Yeah, um, Norelle Lindquist, we interviewed her but she's got an alibi," said Lapointe.

Alex snorted. "Did it occur to you that she might be the intended of our killer? What better way to get to your crush than to clear away the obstacles providing proof of your destiny as their one true love."

"We can't really put a detail on her while she's on campus," said Lapointe, which was answer enough.

"No, but you can ask her about who's been especially solicitous, if any guys stand out to her. Apparently there's some of my charming fellow students willing to try to use the circumstance to score, but this would be different, I think?" Alex was feeling out of his depth now that it wasn't about magic, but at the same time he could see it in his head, choosing the Fityow boy because he'd dared to touch the object of the killer's affections. "Did you ever figure out how he was overpowered?"

"Oh, um, some sort of knockout magic," she said, and he could hear papers shuffling. "Dust of Dreams it says here, that sounds more like a street drug than a spell."

"It's a pretty cheap magical dust, doesn't work for very long and sometimes it has side effects," said Alex. "I'm surprised they didn't use a sleeping potion, Dust of Dreams is like first year stuff."

"So you're saying our killer is terrible at potions?" asked Lapointe.
